Cool off after the hike
Bosnians swim in rivers. Every town on a river has its own kupalište, and on a hot weekend half the country is in the water. Most spots are free and unmarked — a bend in the river, a path down through the trees — and a handful of the famous ones charge entry. What surprises visitors is the temperature: these rivers come out of karst springs and stay near 10 °C even in August, while the reservoirs get properly warm.
There are no lifeguards at any of these places. Cold water takes your breath in the first seconds, so get in slowly; rivers run faster and deeper after rain; and jumping into water you have not checked is how most accidents here happen.

Bilećko jezero · Bileća
An enormous, startlingly clear reservoir that is almost always empty of people, with wild horses on the surrounding karst. The water temperature is as good as it gets in BiH.

Blidinjsko jezero · Jablanica
A shallow lake at 1,180 m in Blidinje Nature Park, between Čvrsnica and Vran. More a place to stop and look than a swimming destination — but on a hot day the shallows are welcome.

Boračko jezero · Konjic
A glacial lake at about 400 m with unusually warm, clean water, small beaches and two campsites. The easiest lake swim in Herzegovina and a natural pairing with a Prenj or Bjelašnica hike.
Swimming is free; parking is sometimes charged in high season.

Buna · Blagaj
The short, very cold Buna downstream of Blagaj, where the village stretches of bank are used for swimming.

Swimming at Vrelo Bune — the spring itself, under the tekke — is prohibited. Use the stretches downstream.

Jablaničko jezero · Konjic
A long reservoir with informal beaches strung along the M-17 between Konjic and Ostrožac. The water reaches the mid-twenties in August, and the roadside lamb restaurants are an attraction in their own right.

Trebižat · Ljubuški
The quiet alternative to Kravica, at Veljaci: a lower, wider fall you can swim right up to, with no entry fee and a fraction of the crowd.

The town beach on the Neretva just below the old Ottoman bridge — a five-minute walk from the centre of Konjic and properly cold, because the Neretva always is.

Trebižat · Ljubuški
The best-known swimming spot in the country: a wide pool under a 25 m curtain of falls, with restaurants and bars along the bank. Come early or late — midday in July and August is very busy.
Around 20 KM entry plus parking. Cards are accepted at the gate, but bring cash for the stalls.

Where the Neretva widens into Jablanica Lake at Ostrožac: shallow, warm and easy to reach from the main road.

A reservoir ringed by steep hills, with relaxed wild camping along the shore and the Šćit peninsula in the middle of it.

The water level drops noticeably from late summer, which moves the shoreline.

A proper town swimming spot on the clear Bregava, with a jumping ladder into the deep pool and a café on the bank. Free, and busy with locals all summer.

A riverside beach in the middle of Trebinje, on water that comes straight out of the karst and stays cold through the hottest Herzegovinian afternoon.

Plivsko jezero · Jajce
Twin lakes just outside Jajce with a lakeside park, playground, barbecue area, campsite and boats for hire — the most family-ready swim on this list, and the watermills are a ten-minute walk away.

Prokoško jezero · Fojnica
A glacial lake at 1,640 m on Vranica, ringed by katun shepherd huts and small konobas, with horses and quads for hire. The water is properly cold — this is a dip, not an afternoon swim.

Rakitnica · Umoljani
Deep green pools in the canyon between Bjelašnica and Visočica, reached on foot from Lukomir, Umoljani or Dubočani. Some of the clearest water in the country, and the hardest to get to.

Small river beaches south of Sarajevo around Trnovo and Krupac, the closest cold-water swim to the city and a standard stop on the way back from Bjelašnica.

One of the shortest rivers in Europe, rising from a karst spring near Bihać and joining the Una a few hundred metres later. Startlingly clear and startlingly cold.

One of the largest reservoirs in Europe, spread across the Livno plain, with several beaches and reliably warm water. Also a well-known kitesurfing spot when the wind gets up.

A remote glacial lake under Šator mountain at about 1,490 m, crystal clear and usually empty. The last stretch of road is rough gravel.

River beaches at the rafting camps where the Tara meets the Drina above Foča — the coldest, fastest water on this list and the finish line for most Tara rafting trips.

Trnovačko jezero · Tjentište
The heart-shaped glacial lake under Maglić at 1,520 m, reached on foot from Prijevor. One of the most photographed places in the region, and freezing even in August.
Swimming is free; camping by the lake carries a ranger fee of about €2.

Zelengora · Tjentište
The "mountain eyes" of Zelengora — Donje Bare, Orlovačko and Kotlaničko — glacial lakes you can swim in, each within reach of a lodge in Sutjeska National Park.

Not natural, but too good to leave out: salt-water lakes built in the middle of Tuzla over the old salt works, with beaches, slides and lifeguards. The easiest swim in the country with small children.
